I'm Feeling Optimistic!
Am I deluded? Or are (some) things actually getting better?
I am not really known for having a cheerful disposition. One friend today described me as ‘choleric’. I’m not sure what that means, but it doesn’t sound particularly sunny.
All the same, I currently am having trouble keeping the smiles contained. There’s just so much good happening. Admittedly, as I write this, Arthur Fery is getting trounced by Alexander Zverev at Wimbledon, but he’s in a Semi Final! Astonishing. And the England team are not out of the world cup yet, and show every sign of. beggining to play quite well.
That’s just sport. In politics, Donald Trump is very clearly being humiliated by Iran. I disliked the Iranian regime intensely, but you got to hand it to them, they made a chump of old Donald - or rather he made a chump of himself, by empowering the regime he tried to so crudely overthrow. And his ratings are crashing accordingly.
In this country, Labour have a charismatic new leader. It’s true we don’t have a clue what he’s going to do, but he looks good and communicates well, and that’s half the battle won right there. I feel sorry for Sir Keir, who seemed a pretty decent if indecisive bloke, but needs must - anything to keep the dreadful Farage out of No 10.
And on that subject who can fail to be encouraged and amused by the antics of Farage himself, in calling a by election that no one wants to fight apart from Count Binface, himself a charismatic leader, albeit from a different planet. Can you image the contest and the subsequent announcement of results? Whatever the outcome, Farage is going to look truly ridiculous as well as corrupt and hypocritical. For the first time for a while, it feels like Reform UK are very firmly on the back foot, and I hope destined to stay here.
On a more personal level, the sun is shining (yes I know it probably because of climate emergency, but a sunny day is still a sunny day) and I’m spending most of the summer in my beach hut, cooking on the barbecue and sitting in a deckchair watching birds scrabble for kelp or whatever it is they eat.
